What Is a Distribution Box?
A distribution box, or “D-box,” is an important part of your septic system. After wastewater leaves the septic tank, it goes into the distribution box. The D-box spreads the water evenly into the drain field pipes. If the distribution box fails because of age, damage, or clogs, wastewater cannot reach the drain field as it should. This can cause backups, bad smells, soggy lawns, or even a complete system failure.
What Is a Drain Field?
The drain field (also known as a leach field) is where the final treatment of your wastewater occurs. It’s a series of perforated pipes buried in gravel-filled trenches. As wastewater flows through these pipes, it slowly filters through the gravel and soil, where natural processes break down contaminants. A healthy drain field is indispensable for safe, efficient wastewater treatment.
Our Recent Septic System Rescue
We recently worked on a 30-year-old septic system that was having problems. The homeowner saw that no water was reaching the drain field, which is a common sign of a broken distribution box. We found the problem, fixed the damaged D-box, and got the water flowing to the drain field again right away.
To make the system even better and give it more capacity for the future, we added 100 feet of new drain field piping. By connecting to the existing gravel drain field and expanding it, we gave the homeowner peace of mind and saved them from a much more expensive full system replacement.
